Intent

Here at Signhills Infant Academy we understand the importance of Physical Education for all pupils. Our curriculum is inclusive and allows all pupils to access a range of physical activities. We ensure all pupils are willing to practice and take part in different activities and situations, alone, in small groups and in teams, applying skills to achieve high levels of performance. Physical Education at Signhills Infants will develop pupil’s sporting knowledge and allows them to learn about themselves, the importance of healthy lifestyles, self-expression, decision making, social skill and water safety. We encourage pupils to be active throughout a P.E lesson and encourage creativity and imagination in their techniques, tactics and chorography. Our pupils will know how to collaborate and cooperate as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equality of play to embed life-long values.

We currently follow a progressive scheme of work written by Complete PE.

Implementation

At Signhills Infant Academy we teach a progressive curriculum written by Complete PE in line with the National Curriculum. Through our P.E provision we teach the four main aspects of physical education through a wide range of sports, activities and games.

We offer:

- Agility, Balance and Co-ordination

- Dance

- Gymnastics

- Swimming

- Ball skills, hands, feet and rackets

- Games attacking and defending

- Athletics

- Team building (Years 1 & 2)

We ensure a progression of skills through the school with children building on previously taught skills, as mapped out in our long term planning document. We want to help shape, improve and grow our children’s strength, flexibility, endurance, coordination, teamwork skills, competitive attitude and their overall health.

We believe Physical Education plays a vital role in children’s physical and emotional development as well as their health. At Signhills Infant Academy we provide a safe but challenging environment for children to reach their full potential, learn different skills and become well rounded athletes with experience of a wide range of sports.

Impact

We want to develop the foundations for a lifelong love of physical activity through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. We aim to expose our pupils to many different forms of physical activity in the hope they will all find something that they enjoy. From our lessons, our children will learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness. We offer afterschool clubs and host visitors throughout the year with the aim to encourage children to take this into their life outside of school by joining external clubs and teams. We equip our children with sporting skills and a love for physical activity. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives using the skills and knowledge they have acquired from their experiences at Signhills Infants.
