Intent
At Signhills Infant Academy, we aim to create confident, enthusiastic writers by providing them with a writing curriculum that is engaging and builds their enjoyment. To do this, we begin by encouraging children to enjoy a range of literature through high-quality texts. This develops their vocabulary, and use of it, which is shown through writing.
We aim for our children to apply their phonic knowledge when spelling and to write with increasing grammatical accuracy. Writing skills are explicitly taught and modelled to ensure learners can apply these skills independently.
We want our children to be proud of their writing and recognise why their writing should be celebrated.
Implementation
Writing is taught daily through Literacy lessons. Writing is closely linked to reading with the use of high-quality texts. Children are initially given opportunities to develop their language skills orally, learning new and appropriate vocabulary which are relevant to the purpose/genre of writing. After practising them verbally, children then progress to using these skills in their writing. A WAGOLL is used as an example to show children how to successfully apply practised skills in their writing. The children approach a piece of writing in smaller ‘sections’ and edit and improve their writing after each section.

Impact
Impact:
Our writing curriculum will lead to children having the knowledge and skills to write successfully and with confidence. We aim for all children to develop and build upon their writing skills as they progress through each school year. By the end of Year 2, children will have an increased knowledge of vocabulary through the use of high-quality texts and will have produced a piece of writing they are proud of.
